Two years ago any luxury fashion “must-have” worth its waiting list had to cost at least £500 to gain traction as a credible status symbol. Appropriately, this winter’s cult buy is more modest. Chanel’s Jade nail polish, an interesting shade of medicinal mint, cost £16 when it launched in Selfridges in London, back in September.

Having sold out in 40 minutes, Jade is now a collector’s item. Bottles on eBay (possibly placed there by impoverished beauty editors since hardly anyone else managed to get hold of it) are fetching £84.
